Kasey: Resident in Counseling for The Wise Family
Kasey is a mom to two fabulous daughters. She loves to read, dance, be on or near the water and take naps in her spare time. Kasey’s knowledge of the school system and best practices for teaching and learning, paired with her honed counseling skills, leaves her expertly suited to work with children and their families. She believes in the power of play and that all behavior is communication.
Kasey works collaboratively with children, families, and schools to address challenging behaviors and/or feelings. Her main goal is to support children in building their own skills so they can regulate emotions, respond to challenges, and face the day with resilience and self-confidence.
She holds a Masters in Education for School Counseling and a Post Counseling Licensure Certificate in Community Counseling. She is actively pursuing licensure in Virginia as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Her professional journey has included teaching preschool, working at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum education programming department, and community counseling. Since 2006, she has worked in Fairfax County Public schools as an Elementary Professional School Counselor and as a Resource Counselor for School Counseling Services in FCPS’s central office.
Amanda: Therapist for The Wise Family
Amanda has called Alexandria home for most of her life. Her ideal vacation is a week at the beach with a good book (or six). She enjoys cooking and baking however she usually gives away most of the treats to her friends and family. Although she does not have her own dog she is an enthusiastic puppy aunt! In her free time you might find Amanda around the fire pit catching up with her friends or scouting new places to photograph.
Amanda completed her undergraduate degree in Social Work along with minors in Family Studies and Criminal Justice at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. She is a proud Duke Dog alumnus and followed her time at JMU by earning a Masters degree in Social Work from VCU. Richmond introduced Amanda to one of her great loves, Sugar Shack Donuts, which has thankfully since expanded to Alexandria. Amanda recently became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has spent the last 3 years working as a Therapeutic Day Treatment Counselor in an elementary school setting. She hopes to someday become certified in play therapy.
Dominique: Therapist for The Wise Family
Dominique is from New York and never misses the US Open. She enjoys traveling, exercising, spending time with friends and family in her free time. She hopes to combine her love of tennis and travel by attending all the Grand Slams. Dominique’s biggest accomplishment is being the first in her family to earn a doctorate.
Dr. Dominique Adkins, Ed.D, LPC, NCC, ACS is a licensed professional counselor and approved clinical supervisor. After completing her undergraduate work at Georgetown University (HOYA SAXA!), Dominique obtained her Ed.D in Counselor Education & Supervision and M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Marymount University. Dominique has multicultural and positive psychology research background with vast clinical and assessment experience working in both residential and outpatient settings with clients of all ages with co-occurring disorders. She is currently full time online faculty for the Counselor Education and Supervision doctoral program and Clinical Mental Health masters program at Grand Canyon University.
Vanessa: Resident in Counseling for The Wise Family
Vanessa is a proud Alexandria local, with a passion for cooking and travel. She loves music, and can often be heard singing or humming in her spare time. Vanessa is a huge believer in the power of positive reinforcement, and loves to offer words of encouragement to others in need. Vanessa hopes to write her own series of therapeutic children’s books, with the objective of providing encouraging forms of psychoeducation to school aged children.
Vanessa completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Old Dominion University in Norfolk,VA. After completing her undergraduate degree, she worked as a paraprofessional for Special Education students grades K-5, within the Alexandria City Public School System. During this time, she discovered her passion for counseling and differentiated learning. Vanessa soon began working as a Therapeutic Day Treatment Counselor within the Alexandria City Public School System, offering counseling and behavioral support to students grades 6-12. Vanessa obtained her Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Medaille College in Buffalo, New York. Since earning her Masters degree, she’s worked collaboratively with children, families, and other care providers as an Intensive In Home and Outpatient Counselor. Vanessa is actively pursuing licensure in Virginia as a Licensed Professional Counselor.
Karin: Resident in Counseling for The Wise Family

Karin is a life-long resident of Alexandria, and lives with her husband, five children, and lab mix “Tala.” She loves to read, play soccer, and coach her kid’s sports teams. Karin believes that the culmination of her life experiences have helped her become a good communicator and counselor. With over 17 years of parenting her own children in public schools, she strongly believes in the coordination of care between home and school.
With a background in healthcare (she worked critical care at Inova Fairfax Hospital for fourteen years) and being certified as a registered yoga instructor, she brings a wide array of experiences to the Wise Family. During the day, Karin is an elementary school counselor in Arlington Public Schools.Karin holds a Master in Educational Psychology from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Arts in School Counseling from The George Washington University. Karin is recognized as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and she is actively pursuing licensure in Virginia as a Licensed Professional Counselor.
Whitney: Wise Family Counseling Intern

Whitney can often be found outside with her two dogs, trying new fitness classes, or taking spontaneous trips to new places with her husband. In fact, she even decided to cancel her traditional wedding plans to elope with her husband in Northern California after taking a week to drive the Pacific Coast Highway. She has a passion for cooking whole, organic foods and can often be found listening to a podcast about nutrition and the gut brain axis.
Whitney has called many places home. After being born and raised in a small town in central New Hampshire, Whitney moved to Florida to attend Eckerd College and play Division II softball. She completed her undergraduate degree in Literature along with a minor in Child Psychology. She makes the claim that Eckerd is the greatest place on Earth. After graduating from undergrad in 2014, Whitney worked as an elementary school teacher for three years before deciding to make the change to middle school and teaching 8th grade ELA.
She and her husband moved to Alexandria in 2018 along with their two Labrador Retrievers, Addie and Blu. Whitney is completing her Masters Degree at Bradley University and is currently working as intern for the Wise Family. Whitney also does non-profit work for Mothers Against Prescription Drug Abuse (MAPDA) and hopes to one day become a yoga instructor and have her own yoga studio.
Tim: Evaluator for The Wise Family
Mr. Tim is an avid Washington Nationals, Redskins and Capitals fan. He has never met a meal he didn’t like with the
exception of liver and onions, which he will ban if he ever gains a position of power and/or discovers an island. He hopes to someday watch a baseball game from Boston’s famed Green Monster and attend a day game at Wrigley Field in Chicago. His proudest accomplishment has been raising his two children and watching them grow into the stellar young adults they are today.
“Mr. Tim” is a member of our clinical assessment team and has over ten years of experience assessing young clients applying to independent schools throughout the greater Washington DC area. With a M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Towson University, “Mr. Tim” works full time for the Department of Juvenile Justice as the Court Psychologist for the 31st District Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in Manassas, VA.
Amy S.: Patient Happiness Team Leader and Office Assistant
Amy is a mom to three beautiful children, loves sushi any day of the week, and has been known to impersonate a monkey (very well, may we add) at times. She is proficient in Spanish and loves photography, traveling and reading in her spare time. As “the other Amy”, Amy Sosa keeps our practice running smoothly and we couldn’t do the work we do with families without her!
Amy Sosa graduated summa cum laude with a B.S.B.A. in Marketing and a concentration in International Business from Appalachian State University. With a strong background in marketing and administrative support, Amy has gained experience working in radio, education, and the sign and graphics industries.
Emily: Director of Details
Emily is a mom to 3 amazing boys and the wife of an incredibly talented musician. She and her husband, Drew, are huge advocates for foster care awareness. You won’t see her in our office, as she works remotely so that she can spend time traveling with her family and her husband’s band.
Emily is the voice on the other end of the phone when you call to schedule an appointment or inquire about counseling services or educational testing. One of her favorite things to do is to help worried parents get their questions answered quickly.
