Navigating puberty can be confusing and overwhelming, but there are several ways to make the journey smoother.

First, try to understand and manage your emotions by keeping a journal or talking to a trusted friend or adult. Be kind to yourself and remember that everyone makes mistakes and goes through changes, so treat yourself with compassion.

Open communication is key—don’t hesitate to ask questions and share your feelings with someone you trust. Finding healthy outlets like sports, art, or music can help relieve stress and improve your mood.

Educate yourself about puberty to reduce any fears or confusion. Maintaining a positive outlook on challenges can make them easier to handle. Building a supportive network of friends and family is crucial for feeling connected and understood. Additionally, practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing or mindfulness can help you stay calm.

Focus on appreciating your body for what it can do rather than just its appearance. Finally, if you’re struggling, seeking help from a counselor or therapist can provide valuable support—like the team at Wise! With these strategies, you can navigate puberty with greater confidence and resilience.

Unfortunately, everyone goes through puberty. However, this fact provides kids with the opportunity to discuss emotional and physical changes with parents and guardians, who can speak from experience. Adults have the ability to normalize something that typically insights feelings of embarrassment. That’s powerful! Telling a kid they aren’t crazy for feeling emotional while their body is changing is powerful! The best thing parents can do to support their child in this process is to create a safe space for kids to ask questions, feel validated, and learn what is happening emotionally and physically. In these conversations, parents can connect with their kids with patience, compassion, and let’s be honest, humor and humility as they discuss puberty.

It’s important for parents to have open and honest conversations with their teens and tweens about emotional and physical changes, while also respecting their kids’ boundaries to make them feel safe. Although it’s okay not to have all the answers, sharing educational videos and articles can help explain things better and answer any questions. Additionally, therapists can offer support in helping young people cope with the challenges and uncertainties of puberty, validating their experiences and using positive affirmation and self-talk techniques. Daily affirmations and gratitude journals are great resources to help build confidence and maintain a positive outlook.

As you navigate the journey of puberty with your teen, remember that open communication, understanding, and support are key. While this time may be challenging, it’s also an opportunity for growth and connection. If you or your teen need additional support, our team at Wise Family Wellness is here to help.
